Exciting news for King John's Castle as a €5.7 million redevelopment gets underway this year. Outlining the proposed work at the Castle Dr. Cunnane (CEO of Shannon Development) said: “The essence of the new visitor experience at King John’s Castle is to make the Castle itself the core attraction, boosted by living interpretation and re-enactment. The introduction of a wide range of new technologies and specialist multi media techniques will be used to bring the Castle’s development and historical events to life within the context of improved exhibition, interpretation and visitor facilities.
King John, as “Lord of Ireland” minted his own coins and the Royal moneyer would have struck the coins in the Castle mint. Today you can receive your own special coin as a souvenir of your visit to the Castle. The sights, scenes and sounds of the Castle and its environs all combine to recreate the atmosphere of the era.
